His hair actually looks very thin to me. This man looks like he could be somewhat older and (dare I say it) damage to his hair volume from extensions.

I see this a lot in the music industry. Long term extension wear can take its toll. His hair looks plumped up with product.

Women used to do this with brilliantine and pomade in the 20's and 30's. I think it was called Marcelling. You could disguise very thin hair by frying it with chemicals then grilling it like a waffle in irons to hold a hard pattered curl.

Men used brilliantine to disguise hair loss. Watch how the fashions of men in the 20's and 30's used to be a slicked back head of hair. Hair pomade made it look like you had more hair and was meant to be smoothed down.
