Hi
, my first post. Basically I want some help. When I get my hair cut I usually opt for short back and sides (number 2 on the back and sides) and have my fringe flicked - nothing flashy. I've decided to let my hair grow as I think I quite suit it and I now want it cut into a certain style. I've attached a link to the hairstyle I want below and basically I want some help with the following questions please?: http://img246.imageshack.us/img246/9495/bartongg3.jpg - What should I ask for? - What length is the back and sides (I presume the back is the same length as the sides) - What will I ask for so I can have that effect where the hair is just styled onto the ear? - How should I ask for my fringe to be cut? - Also, is the length on the top (apart from the fringe) the same length as the back and sides? - Would I just style it with wax/putty? I have absolutley no idea when it comes to getting my haircut for a different style as I just normally opt for the short back and sides as mentioned earlier. ------ I also like the following hairstyle for some other times maybe: Link I presume to get this style I just need to let my hair grow and mess it normally with my hand? Any help offered will be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Last edited by Tom; 04-24-2008 at 08:08 PM. |

Hiya Tom & Welcome!
Good questions you have there. Though some turn their nose up to this idea, I always emphasize that taking the picture to your stylist helps the communication perfectly. This way you know they see what you are asking for. I know I LOVE it when someone brings a picture. We discuss whether it works with their hair type, etc. Whether it works for them in their time frame in the mornings etc. And we BOTH know we are talking about the exact same style and not just a picture I conjure up of what I "think" they are talking about. Anyways.... The first picture shows the bangs or fringe to be very short in length, and the layers on top are the same as the back and yet longer than the sides, yes. WITH THE EXCEPTION of the very front top which is longer. I hope that answers about how the fringe is cut and the length from the sides to back. Back looks to be about a # 3 while the top front is much longer and should be cut with scissors to do a design cut. The sides are cut in closer, more like a 2. Around the ears are cut out so that it just barely touches them...and you can vocalize this. So you would ask for (and show with your hand) the length in the front to be short, length in the back right above the collar, cut short...try 3 (depends on hair's' density). Trick is you want them to understand you don't want to see the scalp! And though the sides are tapered in a little closer, you don't want more the scalp really showing here (not much anyways) either. Tell them to leave a "Tuft" of hair on top front for fanning out in the style that yes, you could use a bit of wax or putty. Try both to see which you like best with your hair thickness and texture. ![]() Oh yes, the other picture has the fringe quite a bit longer as you already can see. The length is touching the ears, maybe a little more than the other style, yet not mucher longer (layers) around sides and back. Trick is here that layers are longer and they're not cut with clippers at all, just scissors into a longer style. As for his styling. You could experiment different things, however, he appears to have different views here depending on his activity and the wind velocity. ![]() Best of luck! Let me know if I can help further!!!

Thanks Toni
So what would be the simplest way to ask for this haircut? A 3 on the back, slightly longer on the top with a 2 on the sides, but also allow the little 'tufts' to stay to be able to brush over my ear and have no fringe? I also suspect that I should ask for my haircutter not to use the razor at any point and use the scissors at all times? I have also found these images of the same haircut (but a bit shorter in length), hope this helps? http://img261.imageshack.us/img261/5467/22514250ph5.jpg And this is the same style yet longer I imagine? http://img183.imageshack.us/img183/6588/hairph3.jpg Your help has been much appreciated , sorry about the amount of questions though!

Hi again Tom!
Sorry I took so long to respond. Somehow I overlooked your post at first. They say the only stupid question is the one not answered, so do not feel badly about the questions! ![]() You are correct on both counts regarding these two views of pretty much the same haircut as your original one. One shorter than the other. quote from Tom....."So what would be the simplest way to ask for this haircut? A 3 on the back, slightly longer on the top with a 2 on the sides, but also allow the little 'tufts' to stay to be able to brush over my ear and have no fringe?" Yes until you get to the word tufts. I'd say to Leave a longer tuft of hair in front center. (and this has nothing to do with length over the ears. The length around this area (around the ears) has the length cut by the stylist separately. Depending on the stylist's preference, he/she will cut it before or after the clipper cut and will either use the same clippers or their scissors. Either way, just ask him/her to leave a little touching your ear if that is what you prefer. ![]() As for never using the clippers. Not necessarily. They may still do so, being careful to use 2, 3 or 4 for shorter versions. etc. The only thing they will have to watch out for is that area that's front and center. Using the clippers would make it easy to just cut that the same length as the rest of the top. ![]() Mind you, most clippers have guards that go up to 6, 7, and 8 so a longer style is still possible with them. Hope this helps!

Hey, got my haircut a few weeks ago now and tbh I didn't suit it.
Anyway, my hair is quite long again now and I am going to go back to my short back and sides.Toni, I've provided the link of the next cut I'd like, it's pretty straight forward, it's short back and sides but I need help on the lengths. http://img58.imageshack.us/img58/1587/73747784os8.jpg That's the cut I'd like, what length should I ask for on the back and sides and how long should I ask for my fringe and should I ask for no guard? Thanks for your help.
