Question What is a shag?

I see so many posts on this board about shags and I have to admit, I don't know what that is. Every time I think I can picture it, I can't. Even when pictures accompany the post, I still can't put my finger on what the style really is. I thought a shag only applied to short hair.

Default Shags

To answer Crissy's question.

Shags are choppy, layered cuts full of volume that are great for today's "messy" look. They can be short, medium or long.

I found a definition for you and a picture of shag

a hairdo in which hair is cut in slightly uneven, overlapping layers downward from the crown, sometimes with the hair at the front and back hairlines left longer or wispier than the rest

Thanks. When I think shag I guess I always picture Meg Ryan even though the term goes back in my head to the '70s. I don't know whom in the '70s. LOL! I still can't picture it medium or long. Must be a hair block.

The style that Farrah Fawcett made famous.

So Farrah's the shag? Must be why the 1970s are stuck in my head in relation to the shag hairstyle. I never could get my hair to feather like that. But then my mother never let me get my hair cut like that either. LOL!

That's it! I use to have one when I was younger, except the length in the back was longer. They use to have long shags and short shags!

This is only my opinion, yet I am guessing she must have liked the style becoming popular yet didn't want to cut her long hair. Trying to make her trendy, they left her hair long and layered it so it was the shag only longer.

I feel this is how "The Farrah" was born.

Isn't it funny how hair trends happen. And no one can predict whose head they're going to happen on. I'll always remember the year I gave my brother the Farrah poster for his birthday. I was so sick too, but there I am holding the bottom of the poster for him in the picture. LOL!
