Should you lighten your hair the older you get, or darken it, or does it not really matter? I was told you should lighten your hair, because it blends in with the grey better.

Lightening or darkening your hair depends on how old is older. Depending on how well you are aging, usually I don't suggest getting away from darker colors until wrinkles and other aging factors start to set in. The darker shades put an emphasis on the harshness that may be showing up on one's face. Multi-tonal and lighter shades soften the facial features.

Thanks for the advice Toni! I have always wondered about this myself. I in my 40's and I went lighter once and it made me look older, so I went real dark and I looked much better, but the gray seems to show more.

All women are different. I think just testing different colors is the best thing to do. They do make the color treatments that wash out in a couple of weeks. Those could be worth trying.

This advice is helpful to me too. I have been wonderign what to do about my gray hair. I tried to color it with my natural color , but I can't find a color that actually covers the gray. It must be the texture of the grey or something that makes it not hold the color.

My mom went back to her darker red as she got older. The coloring was too harsh for her thinning hair. She uses a veggie based dye now and can rinse it thru herself. No more home stylist visits. Active lifestyle can be tough on older, thinning hair.
