Default Bubble gum stuck in hair

I have never had to do this on my children (yet), but I had to do this with my niece (years and years ago) and I wish I new about this sooner, because we ended up having to get her hair cut.

I have always been told about things like peanut butter, vegetable oil, butter, mayonaise etc.... greasy things. Well maybe I don't do it properly, or don't have the patience to wait for it too work, but it never worked for me.

I recently discovered-RUBBING ALCOHOL! I have used it to get gum out of clothes and carpets, works fast and works great! So why not hair!!

I have also used it for getting silly putty out of clothes too.

I have also heard using and ice cube can help getting gum out of hair. I suppose the ice makes the gum hard instead of sticky allowing it to come out easier. I havn't tried this before, has anyone?

I haven't tried ice although I remember getting some bubble gum stuck into some clothing when I was young, and Mom put the shirt in the freezer. I can't remember if it worked or if she ever took the shirt out of the freezer.

I always have rubbing alcohol around the house. Because it dries so fast, it is great to clean computer keyboards.

Default Ice

Hello rehead25 and Welcome!!!

You are right about the ice and it is exactly what I was going to suggest for the reason you mentioned.

As for rubbing alcohol, I'll have to try that next time on hair. I know it may work on other things so it would be a good thing to try first before the ice just to see.

Thanks! I can learn here too~!

That is really interesting, wish my mom had known that when I was growing up, then we wouldn't have had to cut the gum out the few times I got it in my hair!

Great now I hear about this. My sisters are quite a bit older than I am so I have a nephew that is very close in age to me. Well anyway years ago he stuck silly putty in my hair I remember it like it was yesterday. Of course we had no idea on how to get it out so we ended up cutting it out. I was mortified. I had these short little hairs sticking out. I thought I was going to die from embarassment. Good information though. Now I will know how to get it out in case my son puts in my daughter's hair.

I have always used ice and it's never been a problem. It did take quite a while to get the gum out of my daughter's hair but it was either that or have her hair cut quite short. Worked like a charm.

I have to agree with curlyq! I have never tried it on hair, but I did have to get it out of my daughters shorts! Sat right on a piece out in the hot sun! Worked awsome and doesn't bleach the clothes.

I have tried all of the suggestions from above and the ice does work, but I just don't have the patience to scrap the stuff off, and I would have to keep putting it back in the freezer, because it would thaw too quickly. This way, you just put the alcohol on a cotton ball, and the gum just flakes right off!!

Try it!

Beware the oily things! When I was 11 I put Vaseline in my hair because I thought it would work like gel- really really bad idea. When I was 18 someone told me baby oil was a good conditioner- also bad idea. Neither one shampoos out. The vaseline only came out when we rubbed dirt- yes, dirt!- into it to absorb the oiliness!

Yep, I was a dumb kid.

The easiest way that my mom used to get gum out of our hair was peanut butter. I know it sounds gross, but it gets the gum out and it washes out easily afterwards.
