Default Long Style for Square Face

Hi ***B*** and Welcome to the Forum!

I do hope you will keep checking back as we help you grow your hair out to a style you'll like.

My immediate thoughts on this are to advise you towards a "choppy", layered style. It should have lots of texture and no real definition in the layers. That's what is so much fun about today's trends and these new layer cuts. I would want to ask you what "type" of hair you have in doing this as well as what color? Light can play a role in how it is attracted and deflected in the style for playing up and down the features we want.

Also, let me know what length and cut you have now. I can tell you that whatever your style is now, it should have long layers that preferably will cover some of your face with the choppy layered look that doesn't draw attention to your jawline.

Let me know and we'll take it from there!

Hi Toni
thanks for the warm welcome! its much appreciated!
in reply to your questions i have medium thickness hair, with a medium length about an inch or two below my shoulders, with a parted fringe that just hits the top off my cheekbones on both sides, if you have ever watched buffy then its a bit like sarah michelle gellars in season 4 episode 1 "freshman". There is a vicious debate between a guy friend and me as to wether i have dark blonde hair or light brown its kind of on the verge between the two. It does have some layers that come from my jawline down and dont go al the way around my head just at the front!

I am planning to book a haircut sometime in the next week so i will take the "choppy" layered style into consideration, unless i get other replies in between that time.

Thanx so much for the ideas and i hope to hear from you soon

Hello again ***B***!

Good to hear from you.
You have a debate with your friend about your haircolor you say. I suppose it's that glass half full/ half empty syndrome? LOL
Sounds to me like you have beautiful hair and yes, I think the new layer cut would suit you well. However, I've always felt that it is up to the wearer and if he/she decides to make a change and it's what they want than it has matched their personality well. Listening to others is a good thing especially when it comes to our appearances. After all, we only see ourselves on occasion in a mirror where others see us a lot more to include our mannerisms, posture and what makes up our identity. However, in the end, if it is our decision, than it's personal and it speaks volumes about who we are.

I may recommend many things, yet I always hope the individual makes the decision based on their gut feelings. Somehow, I feel that is exactly what you are going to do and I cannot wait to hear how it turns out.

So please let us know.

Hey again Toni
I had my hair trimmed today. only trimmed as something went wrong with the booking and i wasnt put down and didnt want to keep my hairdresser there late. She confirmed for me that i do have blonde hair from her hair colour chart. I would of classed what she said was the darkest blonde as a dark brunette but there we go! She also confirmed that i have a round face and not a square one so im not sure if choppy layers will work for me. Im thinking of growing my hair out to all one length and then maybe drasticly changing it rather than having to work with what iv currently got, what do you think? Hope to hear from you soon
Becky ***
p.s thanks for saying that it sounds like iv got beautiful hair, that was very sweet and from listening to how much you seem to know about it, im guessing you do aswell. Thanx again

Hey there ***B***,

You are too kind. My hair is far from flattering. I think I have the worst hair type of all hair types. In fact, it is the main reason why I became a cosmetologist in the first place. lol

So, you were told you have a round face. A choppy sort of haircut could make it appear more round so let's re-evaluate. Usually soft layers are a better idea, yet since you don't have layers, I think you would be unhappy to go this route. Any hairstyle that creates height on top of the head would work, therefore creating an illusion of elongating the roundness of the face. Then again, even though we've not met, I don't think you want anything traditional. You don't want any hairstyle that would make the fullest part of a round face to appear any fuller such as the fullness from a choppy hairstyle here in this area where I suggested before as around the ears. However, moving the choppy area down to the bottom near the ends where tapering is usually done would draw the attention "down" around your neckline, therefore creating the illusion of making your face longer and taking away from any 'roundness'.

Didn't you say your hair was a little past your shoulders? Run this idea past your stylist. That is, when you get actual time set aside just for you! : D Good luck with that. And again, let me know.

Hey Toni

Im sure your hair isnt that bad! lol!
You're right! i dont think i would like layers, however i dont know about not liking traditional hairstyles. Im one of those people who lives in the future apart from when it comes to some clothing and hairstyles. Im rather random! lol! Iv been doing a bit of research, (mostly with old copies of the magazine Bliss,) and have found loads of very flattering hairstyles of Kate Hudson with boho waves and I have been told that she also has a round face. So mayb i should try that. What do you think?

Also we have a slight confusion with my face shape it seems, My mum thinks i have either an oval or square shaped face but definatly not round and my hairdresser also seemed pretty confident when she said i had a round face. After asking my sister, (not quite sure on her hairstyle knowledge!) I was told that she reckons i have a mixture of the three. So basically a roundovalsquare shaped face. How fun!!

I have also found out by doing a bit of fun dancing with a m8 lately. Have you ever kinda tiped ur head upside down and then brought it back up and saw ur hair like falling rather gracefully around but not onto ur face? well my hair did that and i think that that really made my face look a lot prettier (or i just didnt realise i was havin a head rush! lol). Im going to try blow drying my hair backwards this evening and then sleeping with a headband on and seeing what it looks like in the morning.

If you have any other suggestions please email back
Thanx
Becky***

Default Roundish, Squarish, Ovalish

HEY B!!!

Am glad to hear from you!! It's been a while.

You have a great point going with Kate Hudson styles if she has a round face. I would have to look for a pic of her to see. We all should determine our face shapes (and flaws too I'm afraid), find celebrity styles that have the same shapes and flaws and check out their hairstyles. So, yes, great idea. You're right on with that.

Truly determining your face shape means taking that hairband and pulling all your hair back and looking at the skin of your face. What kind of an imaginary line can you draw in the mirror? If you have some glass chaulk and you are trying to decide this yourself, draw an outline of your face shape with it. Then stand back and study it. Good idea, huh?

Well, a square face is determined by a hairline that looks receded in the two top corners. (This is me and I have to always do something with my hair here when I pull my hair up or back.) And a true square face would have a full jawline where their jaw fills out to match the top making it look like just like an imaginary square. Someone with a pointed chin, receding top two corners and has what is called a widow's peak (hair comes to point in center of hairline), this is a heart shaped face. Round of course has no points or corners. John Madden comes to mind when I try to describe a definite round face, though you don't have to be heavy like him to have a round face.

An oval face is considered to be the perfect face shape. Your face literally looks oval or egg shaped. Mine would be considered oval if I didn't have the top two corners, however, I keep them covered so as to not accent them or draw attention to this. Should this be you, you could do the same. Wear whatever style you like, just keep those two top corners covered up.

I believe some round face shapes can still wear the choppy cuts, just as long as it doesn't do anything to look fuller through the middle. This would only make the round face looker more round. Can't have that. The choppy layers look good on square faces to take the attention off the exact proportion of the frame of the face. It's always about playing up our best features, while not clashing with anything and always down-playing our not so best features.

Have I suggested the virtual hairstyling before to you? It is the absolute best way to go when wanting to see your face with many different styles. That one on the Hairstyles Watch main site is three dimensional and can show you your style from all angles. It's great.

Ok, will check back again to see if you have determined your hair type. Let me know. and Take care!!!
