My friend told me I should get my top layer texturized when I go in for a trim and get my roots done. I like the idea, but I've never heard of the process. Do I really want to do this? Will it really give me height and volume on top? Will I regret this for years to come?

Hello Crissy,
Answering your last question first, No, you won't regret it for years to come. Unless it takes years for your hair to grow 1/2 an inch. Texturizing is a fun thing to do to hair when you want movement, fullness and "lift". Am uncertain by what you mean by getting your roots done though. Are we talking a darker color? As is the latest fad? Or are we talking a root perm? Changing the color of your roots is daring. Most women have this look naturally from color growing out to their natural color and therefore, the contrast. This is a much more sensible approach to the whole concept since your natural color of growth won't be hard to match colors with and you can work with it for color changes. I wouldn't recommend coloring the root area though folks have chanced it. The best way to get the two toned look is to change the color of your ends or get a drastic light/dark highlighting technique. If you are referring to a doing a "root perm" this would make sense for someone desiring some volume. Let us know, we'd love to hear your befores and afters. And don't hesitate to ask any questions along the way. ![]() Have fun! Toni

Hi Toni. You are so cool and always so helpful.
Getting my roots done is just fixing the color in my hair where my hair has grown. It has grown SO MUCH since July when I last got it colored. I don't think I need to get my whole hair colored and can probably just get my roots done. My stylist will know. My friend wants to color my hair. We're all a little nervous, but my attitude is pay to get my hair colored now or pay to get my hair colored or color fixed after won't make a difference. What is the texturizing process? What she explained to me really makes me nervous since my hair has gotten so long. In my top layer of hair are just a few hairs made a lot shorter to supply volume and lift? My friend thinks if I go with the texturizing and a few more layers that I won't need a body wave. I'm willing to try. I'm just always nervous about different. Crissy |

And thank you! I do try to be helpful!! I can certainly understand your hesitance about "different". I think a lot of us are that way about many things we are unschooled about. Texturizing cuts (and I am guessing that you are looking for textured hair through a hair cut as is the latest look) work better on medium to coarse (and thick) hair types. It's not so helpful for fine hair yet a little texturizing can be done and be successful. However, fine hair types must understand that as with all hair styling techniques, nothing is going to make your fine hair look really thick. This just makes it look thicker. What happens is a layer cut is applied and it's not your traditional layer cut. Long, straight hair is going out. Shoulder length hair, like yours, is "in" now and layers with it. Texturizing takes on choppy looking layers that are really cool and they are done in a way that the hair leans back onto itself for support making it appear fuller and therefore has more body. I know the "leaning" definition may sound vague or confusing. However, I just wanted to emphasize that we are not talking traditional feathering and layers that allow your hair to lay down nicely in a sweeping motion. This is a mod look thats fab and you will start a trend amongst your ***rs. It's a choppy layer with purpose and not the chopped look a three year old would give her best friend. : D The trick is to know, I mean really know and trust your stylist. Communicate well with him or her. Talk about your hair type, the maintenance and day to day styling techniques for the texturized cut you are about to receive. I think that if you have found the right stylist to give you the best tex-cut you can receive, you will absolutely love it. Oh, btw, the shortest the short layer would be should be no shorter than around the bottom of your ear. Either way, you can request this, emphasizing you only want the fullness from the chin down. As for your color, well, you are right about only needing it on the regrowth (virgin) hair. The last 5-10 minutes, the color should be pulled through to the rest of the strands. In other words, the color should be applied to the rest of the hair strands to revamp and refresh them. You could let your friend do this, however, it is difficult to match over the counter color with professional hair color. And if it needs to be professionally "fixed", it is more than just a nuisance for the stylist, it can be harsh on your hair and an ordeal for both of you. I think you know my recommendations on this subject. ![]() Talk to your stylist about your color and making it work with the texturized cut. Your hair color can have an impact and make a difference concerning the overall look. You want the cut and the color to compliment each other, not work against each other. Good luck and please let me know what you decide and how it's going. I don't know if you told me your hair type or what color your hair is. However, I'm excited for you for the right tex-cut could really turn some heads! Can't find a good picture right now to show you. Hope that this gives you some idea. And yes, I know her hair is shorter than yours. You do NOT need your length shorter to get texture.

That is a great picture! Too short for me, but a great picture all the same. I think I deleted all the old pictures of my hair out of my phone without moving them to my computer, but I'll get a good before and after picture and then I'll post both. I'm going to take your post with me when I go to my stylist on Thursday.

The day I was looking for a pic for you, I was having a difficult time finding what I wanted. I knew this model's hair was shorter than yours. The point was to show you how the hair could end up laying when it is cut properly. Sure hope you (and your stylist) can see this point. I wish you lots of luck and can't wait to see your hair!
