Who else finds Victorian hairstyles interesting? In the first one, I don't like how they are tied together in the front, but otherwise, I think it is beautiful. In the second picture (I linked the thumbnail because it is sort of big), I particularly like the 3rd picture from the left on the top row, but all of them are nice.

Interesting subject Stefanie. I personally am fond of most Victorian decor. Yet as a hairstylist, I hadn't thought much about the styles of beauty from this era. I do know that not too many decades ago, the methods of curling and manipulating hair were primitive and damaging. And going much further back, electricty played a major part to bring about a form of permanent wave. That would have had to occur since Benjamin Franklin discovered electricty in 1752. Makes you wonder about truly "fried" hair.
Cannot begin to imagine the hours dedicated to coercing hairsytles during the Victorian period. I'd say all their hairstyles should be recognized as works of art for the time and effort they put into them. Not to mention the agony and damage to the hair endured by the wearer. Great point. Thanks for bringing this to our attention.

I love victorian style. I was considering a style like one of these for my wedding (my dress is somewhat victorian styled), but since I am probably doing my hair myself, I decided it might be too hard... I am very impatient and there is NO WAY I could spend very much time on my hair without wanting to rip it all out!

Wow Stefanie,
I would love to find you a Victorian style for your wedding that you or at least you and a friend could do. The modern, messy, curly updo will be interesting and almost seems Mod-Victorian. (if I dare make up such a thing) If you cannot think of any girlfriends, don't you know a teenager taking cosmetology in school who would love the practice? Some of these girls are quite talented and when they are learning about hair, many of them are eager to play in it. It would be safe and fun. After all, you aren't letting them cut, color or perm. Just some harmless curling, and styling. You could play the pampered bride-to-be!

That student idea sounds great, I think I might look into that. Mod-victorian sounds awesome, that should be a category for clothes! I'd love some modern victorian styles to be introduced, hair and clothing...

I've seen lines of clothing that looked like they were leaning towards Victorian styles. I notice Alyssa Milano's character on Charmed wears a lot of Victorian inspired clothes... makes me jealous.

I love the look but it can be very hard to get away with without looking costumish. Also i have no idea how to do some of this. i think you would have to be a pro or a movie dresser to know exactly how to do this.
And have long hair. |

Remind me to find a good Victorian style and I'll see what changes I might make to get it more modern.

Does anyone have a good idea for styling my long, all one length hair into a 1880's do? A lot of the styles I've found seem to have bangs, which I refuse to cut for one play!
