Default Messy hairstyles

I have been trying to get my fiance to let his hair grow out just a bit. The cut he has now grows out to the point where he can't style it after about a month. I'm trying to get him to go for something like this:

Ignore the guy, he's kind of goofy looking.

It might even be good if it were shorter, something like this:

That style is basically what he has now, just a bit longer so that it wouldn't be as noticeable when he needs a cut.

Unfortunately, he doesn't seem to want to do this. He thinks the longer hair is weird, as if I am telling him he should grow his hair to his butt

Stefanie,

Would your boyfriend object to the "spiked" condition of the top of the style even at a shorter length? He may not be ready to be too noticeable as I know guys can be self conscious with this daring, bedhead style.

The thing to keep in mind with any style is that it is going to lose its "shape" no matter what. Our hair strands don't all grow at the same pace, therefore, it becomes different lengths and trying to make it lay down one way or another can become impossible. Hence, you are fighting an inevitable battle. The trick with any style, is to keep the haircut maintained regularly. That way, whether he likes his current style or a change to this new one, he can have it on a daily basis. Once it can not be controlled by the usual methods, it's time for a haircut.

Oh and btw, if his hair is fine, a razor cut should be considered as it would be a necessity for this look for needed texture and control. Otherwise, more coarse hair will stand up easily up to an inch or so on its own, although any hair type could be razor cut for same purposes. And there's always hair gel that can be applied when damp, standing the top up as desired and letting it dry naturally. Finger comb a little when almost dry and dry to alleviate that hard hair though!

I think you're right about him not being ready to be noticed like that. He said he might try out the second style, but definitely not the first. He's worried that because his hair is thin, it won't style the way it should for the cut. He said he's tried the tips you gave about razoring and gel, and it hasn't worked out.

I searched for a larger picture of the second cut (the Edward Norton one), but can't seem to find one where the cut is styled the same way...

Default Gel

Hey Stefanie,

Did your husband spike up his hair with the gel in it and let it dry that way? Then he could take a 'pick' to it when it is COMPLETELY dry to get some of the hardened gel out.

I like both looks. I think both looks would look great on DH too.

I knew the second picture was Edward Norton (I posted a picture of him too) but (and now I'm showing my age) who's the first picture?

Stefanie,

I mentioned your husband trying to let his hair dry with the gel applied with it spiked all up in the areas he or you likes and then breaking loose any dried hard gel. Well, I was thinking, if his hair still seems too fine to cooperate, have him hold the blow dryer on a low setting while bending over and allowing gravity to do it's job. Careful not to get dryer too close to blow it back towards scalp though. And as I said on low. This trick works for us ladies and the men can certainly try it too!

Also, root lifter that you spray on close to the scalp. The nozzle on the bottle helps you to direct the spray right into those roots to give strength in there too.

If he says it seems like too many products, etc., tell him it's worth it and for as short as his hair is, they will last him a long time.

Good luck!

I don't know who it is either!

Toni, I'll let him know what you said. I'll be surprised if he decides to go through with it, though, because every time I show him this thread, he makes funny faces, lol. He said he would grow his hair and let me pick a cut for him before the wedding, but I'm not going to put him through that just so I can see a cut I like on him, lol.

I understand perfectly!!!
Though I have an idea that wouldn't put him out anymore than taking two pictures...
On Hairstyles Watch, every page has the link to "Virtual Hairstyling" on the upper, right-hand corner. I belong to all three of them and have such fun trying different hairstyles on me. All for the click of the mouse!! It's so easy to see how I look and they have short/very short ones so men can see how they look too. I am not sure which one has the very short, but you can certainly check it out??? You would have so much fun and then you could print it out or just bring him to the computer screen to show him how great he would look in various styles.

Oh, and btw, I've been meaning to correct myself as I have been thinking about something I neglected to point out. You can tell him I have fine hair too and the only way I can get my hair to do what I want is to use gel and other products right at my scalp (not down the hair shaft) or it goes FLAT. ugh! And I put it in when my hair is ONLY damp, not towel dry as it is too wet then.

Good luck. And think about the virtual hairstyling. You would love it for you or for him. Anyone would!

This doesn't have to do with him, but I tried your tip on using gel right at the root for volume, and I dared to blow dry my hair, which I don't normally do. I ended up looking like I had cotton candy hair, lol! Too much body... guess I just need some practice.

He ended up just getting it cut the normal way this time. I think I'll ease him into it over time If he gets the top part cut just a bit longer each time while keeping the sides groomed, we might get to it soon

Men are so funny about the hair. They either primp too much or wouldn't be caught dead. I think you can be a career over trainer in the gel dept. i knew a guy in high school in college and I don't think i ever saw his hair dry.
