Default fishtail

When I was little someone showed my mom how to French braid my hair, but she never could learn. I taught myself how to do it on my dolls just thinking about how it looks. Then I taught myself how to braid my own hair.

The own I could never figure out was the fishtail. I think I know it when I see it, but I'm not sure.

I found two different pictures. Is this what you mean?

Oh yes! I especially love that first one. Any help with how to do them? Looks like you have to have a ton of hair. I managed to find some instructions but they were too complicated for me.

I learned how to french braid my hair just a few years ago! I know how to do it the reverse way as well. I can do it on myself, I just can't do it on other people! Guess my brain doesn't work backwords. LOL

From the first picture it looks like the tail of the braid was tucked in through the back?

Reverse French braid? Is that working from the bottom up? Oh that sounds like fun! Doesn't all the blood rush to your head while you're upside down? I tried to do that once. I thought it would be so neat to have the braid start at the nape of my neck and have a great ponytail high on my head. Or did you mean the kind where you put the hair under instead of over? That's called a Dutch braid.

I think the first braid is still a fishtail but it's just so hard to do that it's very loose and then gets tight as the braid comes off the head.

This appears to be a reverse French braid where you braid going 'under' not over. See the different result. This would be the fishtail look done as a reverse French 'LOOSELY'. Great for thick hair.

This second one appears to be two plaits done from one ponytail (though I cannot really see the base that well) that have been banded together at the bottom.

You lost me, Toni. Are you talking about a Dutch braid done loosely? That's the only braid going under not over that I know. The tail end of the braid looks like a fishtail.

Really? Not a fishtail?

What I really want to know is how to do a fishtail. I just can't find instructions that make it simple.
