I prefer using salon products, but if I'm going to spend that kind of money on shampoo and conditioner, "its mine!" Sometimes DH and DD get ahold of it (DH has hardly any hair and DD likes bubbles in her bath!)
So what kind of over the counter product do you suggest for back up? |

Hi beehive,
If I have neglected to welcome you before, I want to say here and now how glad I am to have you here with all your great questions and especially your additions of advice. Ok. Over-the-counter shampoos. A lot of stylists may tell you they don't know anything about general shampoos sold in stores cause we are brainwashed into thinking only salon products are worth the time of day. Not necessarily so. TRESemme used to be a salon product and then they decided to release it to the general public. I use it myself. Baby shampoo is formulated to be safe to the tear ducts and is definitely NOT geared to be good for the hair. So this is the worst shampoo you can use. Or any shampoos in the stores today that claim "no tear formula". They are good for your eyes but not your hair. I have not tested very many over-the-counter shampoos for pH balance as this is how you can tell the ones that are safe and good for your hair. They should be as close to the neutral 7.0 as possible and I would imagine the same strips we use for the pool would work. I buy mine in the beauty supply store. Pantene Pro-V seems to be great with wonderful results. I have also used this and liked it. Many products today specify if they are for oily or dry hair, etc. which is helpful to accommodate your hair type. Those with oily hair should shampoo everyday and the oily hair shampoos help their hair from drying too much. Same with the oily hair conditioners. Those who do not have oily hair yet average hair should shampoo every other day. Dry hair should probably shampoo every two days, and definitely condition their hair each time. I have heard customers talk about the new line of Dove products and that they like their shampoo, although I am unfamiliar with their line myself personally. Oh and the Bedhead line has been raved about too. So it depends on the hair type how often you shampoo. This saves your hair and your pocketbook when it comes to the costs of shampoos. Overall, it is good to have a couple of different shampoos and switch around when you shampoo. Although in your house beehive, you may want to hide your extra bottles. ![]() Hope this helps!

I'm so glad I stopped buying into the lie about salon products being the only good ones. Right now I'm alternating between several Garnier Fructis and Aussie products. I've used Pantene Pro-V before and I like it. Don't know why I'm not using it now. But when I was using salon shampoo and conditioner I would have killed DH if he'd touched them instead of the stuff I bought for him.
I love salon styling products and Bed Head is a favorite. The names they come up with.

I thought over the counter products weighed the hair down, because of all the wax build up? It's good to know this is not true! Salon products can be very expensive.
I like bedhead products, of coarse this purchased through a salon, before the stores offered these good products on the shelf. |

I use Pantene Pro V and I also like the Dove shampoos. I am a believer in switching off shampoos. I don't think the salon shampoos are any better than the ones that are right on the store aisle. At least it didn't make a difference for me.

Dove Therapy seems to be a great shampoo. I've noticed, though, that when used every day, it seems to lose its effect. I don't know if it is just me, but most shampoos do this to me. If I switch occasionally, they work much better. I use Dove Therapy once or twice a week, and it works wonders.

Hi again JoJo
and have I welcomed you yet haircarebear? I don't believe I have. So let me officially welcome you!!! Since you all have been buzzing about Dove hair care products, I bought their shampoo and conditioner to try. I too am a believer of switching off shampoos. My husband always wonders why there are several bottles around! ![]() I think it is good alternate them so that the beneficial properties will offset one another and one product doesn't get built up on the hair shafts.

I have very dark, almost jet black hair and I would have problem with my scalp being very dry, so was told to try Head and Shoulders. My husband uses it too and rather than have all these different types of shampoo in the shower I just use that. I think it works great and smells good too. Now if I go and get my hair colored, I guess I should be using a different shampoo all together.

Clairol Triple Moisture. The moistener leave in product really smells fantastic and keeps your hair from looking fried. These products are the bomb. if you can afford them, do it. You won't be sorry.

I never tried the dove products. I just finished clipping some coupons last night and I believe there are some for Dove shampoo, I'll have to take advantage of it.
I change shampoos all the time- because of price, not because I want to try something different. |
